Eastern Box turtles do need daily drinking water and we supply it via small plastic chick waterers (see photos above). This allows the turtles easy access to drinking water but prevents them from crawling into the water dish and "relieving" themselves (which tortoises and land turtles are very fond of doing). To compensate for this, we take our EBT's out once a week to give them a short soak in shallow warm water in a tub.

The most common health issues with box turtles are eye and ear infections. These are most commonly caused by too dry of a cage (be sure to keep their sleeping end of the cage damp), too little vitamin A in the diet (always offer leafy greens as part of the diet and use a good vitamin supplement) or polluted drinking water (use the chick waterers and give them a weekly soak in water elsewhere). With proper care the Eastern box turtle has a life span of 50+ years.

We let ourselves get talked out of our original breeding group in 2008, took a year off, then decided we missed them enough to justify starting over. So we've started rebuilding a smaller group. I'll post photos of our current breeders as time permits (Salamander and Raspberry are part of the group we let go in 2008 :. Most of our current stock is more along the lines of "Raspberry". I greatly prefer the "Bear-paw" and "Hieroglyphic" patterned specimens with brighter orange to burnt yellow colored markings. However the presence of both good head markings/color and shell design are proving very difficult traits to get in the same individuals. So for now we're preferentially selecting individuals with as bright of head spotting and contrast as we can find.

Our current group did produce a few hatchlings for us last year so we're hoping at least one or two of our girls will be productive for 2015. Egg production is relatively low in EBT's so we don't expect to have very many hatchlings for sale any time soon. To keep the price from being prohibitively high (some of these go for $300 each singly), we purchase our foundation stock in groups rather than as single individuals. Thus we should have a few extra young adults available for 2015. We worm and acclimate them all to the diet described above and they should make excellent pets or breeders for you.
